Flint Hills Resources, LLC companies have earned 78 local-, state- and national-level awards for safety and environmental excellence for 2010 performance.
These honors recognize Flint Hills Resources’ sites and employees for their achievements in operating plants responsibly and safely.
“Flint Hills Resources employees are committed to safety as well as continuing to improve the environmental performance of our facilities,” said Brad Razook, president and chief executive officer of Flint Hills Resources. “The awards the employees and our facilities earned for recent results are an indication of how serious they are and how hard they work.
“We strive for continuous improvement and 100 percent compliance,” Razook said. “Whether it’s increasing our energy efficiency to developing industry-recognized process and personal safety programs, I am proud of our employees as we work to create economic value.”
The company’s Rosemount, Minn., refinery has received the Award of Honor - Governor’s Safety Awards from the Minnesota Safety Council for four consecutive years. It has also received a Wastewater Treatment Facility award from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for two consecutive years.
FHR’s terminals group received the Safety Excellence Award from the International Liquid Terminals Association. In addition, three Wisconsin fuels terminals joined four Texas terminals as Star certified sites under the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Programs. Star certification recognizes the terminals exemplary safety programs.
Safety achievements by the company’s chemical plants were honored with the Thoroughbred Chemical Safety Award from Norfolk Southern. The award recognizes a company for shipping more than 1,000 carloads of regulated hazardous material over the railroad's 22-state network without incident for the year. In 2011, 45 corporations and four plants earned that distinction.
Not only is personal safety data compiled at Flint Hills, but also the company has developed systems to track process safety performance. Tracking and improving this performance is vitally important in preventing process safety incidents such as unintentional releases, uncontrolled reactions, fires or releases of energy.
